A series of sulfonic resins variously substituted with either electron donating or electron withdrawing groups has been analyzed with respect to their thermal stability both under nitrogen atmosphere and in water, and a qualitative screening of their catalytic activity in bisphenol-A synthesis has been performed. Evidence was gathered of the positive effect of electron withdrawing groups in improving not only the resistance of the resins to severe hydrolytic and thermal conditions but also their overall catalytic performances. In particular, resins acylated with pyromellitoyl and benzoyl groups appeared to be the most stable among the resins studied, and well suited for catalytic applications in reactions of industrial interest.
