Evidences of late- to post-Variscan magmatic events are well documented in several European localities of the southern Variscan chain. In contrast, in the pre-Mesozoic succession of the Northern Apennines (Italy) they were only documented through the identification of rare metavolcanoclastic rocks within the late Permian metasediments of Tuscany. Indeed, magmatic events are important chronostratigraphic markers in lithostratigraphic units and represent significant features for the reconstruction of the geodynamic evolution of an orogen. The Alpi Apuane massif includes the largest exposure of metamorphosed pre-Triassic formations of the Northern Apennines. Recently, the first occurrence of Permian magmatic rocks within the Paleozoic basement has been identified. It is represented by metarhyolite rock bodies, exposed near the small hamlet of Fornovolasco and in other localities of the southern sector of the Alpi Apuane.
