The book tackles the problem of the semantic and pragmatic nature of the class of English verbs of cognitive attitude.Building on the Relevance-theoretic account of communication and on some of the most recent approaches to dynamic meaning and meaning construal, such as Cognitive Pragmatics, Dynamic Meaning Construal and Concept Construal, English verbs of cognitive attitude are analysed within the framework of the theory of Lexical Complexity (Bertuccelli Papi & Lenci 2006). Borrowing from the theory of complexity developed within the natural sciences, the lexical domain of verbs of cognitive attitude is presented as a complex dynamic system, characterised by varying degrees and levels of complexity and internal organization, by adaptivity and nestedness and by emergent patterns of self-organization that reduce its complexity and determine the system’s stability at a given time.
