In our paper we try to delineate the sociological ideal-type of military profession. It is a relevant scientifical task to understand if the military profession is an original object for sociology or it is just assimilable to the conceptual ideal-type of “modern profession” (Beruf with a weberian term). If we do a short history of to the military profession, it becomes evident that the military is a special Beruf, which incorporates physically the main function of the modern State: the legal monopoly of use of the force in the national territory. This function is the main reason for the “double diversity” of the military in the everyday life, which can cause a sense of belonging an elite but also a kind of discrimination from the “civil society”. In this sense we can say the military is a special Habitus (in the sense of Bourdieu), that is also characterized by a kind of “homeless” identity, at the borderline between two culture, “military” and “civilian”. It remains an open question: what will happen to the new “postmodern” figure of military, like the peacekeeper? Will he lose the traditional “aura” of the military profession?
