Abstract

Biological and ecological characteristics of cartilaginous fishes have recently led to doubts on the feasibility of sustainable harvesting of many elasmobranch stocks also in the Mediterranean Sea. Catch composition, distribution and time series of abundance indexes of the most important deep-sea cartilaginous species are analysed. Results suggest a positive trend for the populations both in the southern and in the northern part of Tuscany area.
