Last demons, last temptations: I. B. Singer vs. A. Wat short stories. Do I. B. Singer know the works of Polish Avant-garde Masters, particularly of those of Jewish descent? Singer himself would deny, although he did allude to Tuwim or Jasienski in some of his writing. My present attempt is to prove that Singer knew not only the Skamander poetic group, but also polish Futurists’ s works. Singer has also built up on A. Wat’s “Unemployed Lucifer”, a polish literary hit od 1920s, learning on it the techniques of nonsense and pastiche. I have compares two stories by Wat, “Unemployed Lucifer”, and °Jew, the Eternal Wanderer, vs. Singer’s “The last Demon” and “Pope Zeidl”.
