The Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteothomy (TPLO) is a well known modern surgical technique for the treatment of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in the dog. Based on biomechanics’ studies, this procedure provide stabilization of the stifle without mimicking the function of the ligament. As an alternative to the TPLO, in 2002 the Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA) was developed. Only few reports have been published at the moment about the outcome of this procedure. The purpose of the present study is to compare these two techniques on clinical, radiological and cytological point of view, in a short-term retrospective study on 23 dogs that underwent unilateral or bilateral surgery with TPLO or TTA. At post-operative control, the dogs treated with both techniques showed marked clinical improvement. Radiographic examination showed a little progression of osteoarthritis; synovial fluid in most of cases showed a similar pattern in pre-operative and control analysis. In some cases a worsening of cytological condition was seen. Based on clinical signs, TTA seems to show mild better improvement at short term control. Not important differences were seen at radiographic and synovial fluid examination between TPLO and TTA groups.
