This work concerns the Section VIII Division 2 of the American Code ASME (American Society Mechanical Engineers) “Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code”which states alternative rules for vessels with pressures up to 69 MPa. A new and up to date edition of ASME Code is delivered every three years in order to know easily both the new achievements of the scientific and technological progress as well as the changes brought to the rules of the law. Hence, the aim of this work is the comparison between the old and the new edition of Section VIII, Division 2 of ASME Code in order to assess the main innovations and quantify the effects using a case study based on the simple design of a reactor for oil refining.
