Seven-d-old maize cv. Pardus G4480 seedlings were grown for 2 weeks in fumigation chambers under 45, 70 and 110 nl SO2/litre with charcoal-filtered air as the control. No visible symptoms were observed in any of the treated plants, but leaf S, protein cysteine and free amino acids concn increased while leaf soluble protein concn decreased in the treated plants. No significant changes in amino acid composition of the soluble proteins were observed between the control and treated plants. In control plants, the free amino acid pool was dominated by alanine and glutamic acid whilst under SO2, aspartic acid, glycine, glutamine and arginine concn decreased while glutamic acid, asparagine and alanine concn increased. It was concluded that exposure of maize to a gradient of SO2 concn similar to those concn present in rural areas primarily affects protein metabolism causing modifications to enzyme synthesis and functioning even if visible symptoms are not apparent.
