This paper gives a corpus-based account of the frequency and functions of the indefinite article in modern English, concentrating especially on its participation in phraseological units of one sort or another. The research behind the results was based on the analysis of several very large samples of concordance lines downloaded from the British National Corpus. Findings are presented both for the whole corpus and for the spoken components.
