In May 2008 the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety and the University of Pisa have signed a cooperative research agreement dealing with the assessment of the MARS code. The objective of the agreement is to test the capability of the MARS code to reproduce complex 3D TH phenomena typical of a RPV. The experiment selected to fulfil this task is the test No. 09 performed at the Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendeorf (FZD) ROCOM facility, which reproduced a pump start-up occurrence. The present report summarizes the entire activity performed within the abovementioned agreement. A description of a first nodalization and the results obtained by the MARS code together with the support study performed with RELAP5-3D© is presented. To compare the two results the Fast Fourier Transform Based Method has been applied too. During the second part of the agreement a second coarser MARS nodalization has been set-up and used to replicate the selected experiment. A set of sensitivities, agreed with Korean counterpart during a meeting held in Pisa 3rd November 2008, has been executed adopting the second MARS nodalization. The selected test has been also performed by CFX code to enlarge the comparison toward code with full 3D capabilities. The analytical work is concluded through the application of the FFTBM to all sensitivities and to the CFX calculation. Finally a specific section is devoted to recommendation for further MARS independent assessment.
