Abstract

Edmund Kean was considered by his contemporary commentators as the emblem of Romantic acting, the archetypal Romantic actor. The purpose of this essay is to investigate the import and the limits of such assertions, that is, to explore how and to what extent Edmund Kean can be said to have translated for the theatre the tenets of the new sensibility that dominated culture when he was the undisputed king of the London stage.
