The article presents the results of a study conducted in 2006 and 2007 at the request of the Tuscan regional seat of AVIS among two communities of foreign immigrants in Tuscany: the Romanian community in Florence and the Senegalese community in Pisa. The two groups also showed a range of differences with regard to civic cultures and models of citizenship, as with their cultural conceptions of the body, health and sickness. A critical reappraisal of Titmuss and Godbout's analysis and recent literature on blood donation enables deeper investigation of the concept of motivation and social experience. Blood donation reveals complex bonds between bodily existence and the politics of the body, between real support systems and the abstract values that regulate the public space.

Abstract
The article presents the results of a study conducted in 2006 and 2007 at the request of the Tuscan regional seat of AVIS among two communities of foreign immigrants in Tuscany: the Romanian community in Florence and the Senegalese community in Pisa. The two groups also showed a range of differences with regard to civic cultures and models of citizenship, as with their cultural conceptions of the body, health and sickness. A critical reappraisal of Titmuss and Godbout's analysis and recent literature on blood donation enables deeper investigation of the concept of motivation and social experience. Blood donation reveals complex bonds between bodily existence and the politics of the body, between real support systems and the abstract values that regulate the public space.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
