I discuss some virtues and defects of Leslie Tharp's conceptualistic view in the philosophy of mathematics. It has the advantage that, unlike other conceptualistic approaches, it does not impose any restriction on mathematical practice. I argue that such conceptualism is not a viable alternative to realism, but I suggest that a third possibility could emerge from a notion of mathematical concept different from the one adopted by Tharp.

Abstract

I discuss some virtues and defects of Leslie Tharp's conceptualistic view in the philosophy of mathematics. It has the advantage that, unlike other conceptualistic approaches, it does not impose any restriction on mathematical practice. I argue that such conceptualism is not a viable alternative to realism, but I suggest that a third possibility could emerge from a notion of mathematical concept different from the one adopted by Tharp.
