The purpose of this work is the search for a methodology aimed at and improving the existing operational techniques of configurational analysis. The configurational analysis has its origin in the mid-eighties, when Bill Hillier introduced the configurational theory named Space Syntax. Since then it has been subjected to several developments and refinements, yet remaining confined within the study of the mere planimetric features of the urban grid. The development here proposed is aimed at extending the application of configurational analysis by means of the introduction of the third dimension, hence including the appraisal of the orographic features of the settlement and of the slope of its paths.

Abstract

The purpose of this work is the search for a methodology aimed at and improving the existing operational techniques of configurational analysis. The configurational analysis has its origin in the mid-eighties, when Bill Hillier introduced the configurational theory named Space Syntax. Since then it has been subjected to several developments and refinements, yet remaining confined within the study of the mere planimetric features of the urban grid. The development here proposed is aimed at extending the application of configurational analysis by means of the introduction of the third dimension, hence including the appraisal of the orographic features of the settlement and of the slope of its paths.
