These proceedings contain the invited and contributed papers presented at the 13th Conference on Theoretical Nuclear Physics in Italy held in Cortona, Italy, from April 6 to April 8, 2011. As usual, the meeting was held at il Palazzone, a 16th century castle owned by the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa. The aim of this biennial conference is to bring together Italian theorists working in various fields of nuclear physics to discuss their latest results and confront their points of view in a lively and informal way. This offers the opportunity to promote collaborations between different groups. There were about 50 participants at the conference, coming from 15 Italian Universities and Sezioni of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare – INFN (Catania, Ferrara, Firenze, Genova, Lecce, Milano, Napoli, Padova, Pavia, Perugia, Pisa, Roma, Torino, Trento, Trieste). The program of the conference, prepared by the Organizing Committee (Ignazio Bombaci, Aldo Covello, Laura Elisa Marcucci and Sergio Rosati) focused on seven main topics: Few-Nucleon Systems, Nuclear Astrophysics, Nuclear Matter and Nuclear Dynamics, Nuclear Physics with Electroweak Probes, Nuclear Structure, Quark-gluon Plasma and Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions, Structure of Hadrons and Hadronic Matter. At variance with the previous meetings, the invited papers were not meant to give a comprehensive review of the research activities of the various Italian groups, as this appeared to be too heavy a burden for the speakers. Besides a dozen of invited papers, 15 contributed papers were presented, most of them by young participants. The year 2011 has marked the hundredth anniversary of the discovery of the existence of the atomic nucleus by Rutherford, based on the results of the famous Geiger and Marsden’s experiments. This memorable event was the subject of a fascinating talk given by Carlo Bernardini at the beginning of the meeting. In the last session of the conference, Marcello Lattuada gave an overview of the activities and perspectives of the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of Catania. We warmly thank both Bernardini and Lattuada for having significantly contributed to widen the scope of our otherwise purely theoretical meeting. This Cortona meeting ended with a Round Table Discussion on “Future and perspectives of theoretical nuclear physics in Italy”. A Bonaccorso, A Covello, M Di Toro, S Fantoni and M Giannini were on the panel, with G Orlandini acting as a moderator. A prize established to honor the memory of Adelchi Fabrocini was assigned for the first time at this meeting. The prizewinner was Dr Arianna Carbone, to whom go our best wishes for a successful career. This Cortona meeting was permeated with deep feelings of sorrow over the passing away on March 19 of our friend and colleague Alberto Dellafiore. Massimo Di Toro and Francesco Matera highlighted his human qualities and scientific achievements and we are pleased that the written text of their presentation is reported here. It is our wish that these proceedings be dedicated to Alberto’s memory. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of INFN who helped make the conference possible. Abstract
