Abstract

The process of aging results in a progressive deterioration in most endocrine functions. With regard to the endocrine pancreatic function, it is well known that aging is associated with an impairment of glucose tolerance both in humans and in experimental animals.’,* The age-associated alterations of glucose homeostasis can be related both to a decline of the insulin secretory response of pancreatic islets with age” and to the loss of the normal sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin.6 In order to evaluate the relative contribution of these two mechanisms to the determinism of the age-related alterations of carbohydrate metabolism, we have investigated the effects of the oral administration of vanadyl sulfate on glucose metabolism and on the insulin responsiveness of isolated islets in senescent rats. Both vanadate and the vanadyl forms of vanadium have indeed been shown by many investigators to have insulin-like effects on glucose metabolism.’
