A performed detailed lithostratigraphy and a closely spaced sampling of the Ottone Unit, cropping out in Vara (Zignago area), Magra (Aulla area) and Mommio (Fivizzano) valleys, allowed to refine the stratigraphy of this unit. In the investigated area, the Ottone Unit includes the ophiolithe-rich Casanova Complex, the marly-calcareous turbidites of the Ottone Flysch (Helminthoid Flysch) and the Monte Veri Shale. This latter is intercalated in lower portion of the Ottone Flysch and is very similar to the Casanova Complex. The Casanova Complex-Ottone Flysch boundary lies within the middle Campanian Ceratolithoides aculeus Zone. The sampled Ottone Flysch spans from Ceratolithoides aculeus to Quadrum gothicum Zone. The emplacement of the Monte Veri Shale, intercalated in the Ottone Flysch, ends within the middle Campanian Quadrum gothicum Zone. A refined stratigraphy of the Ottone Unit cropping out from Zignago to the Trebbia Valley is here proposed. It is based on the achieved results, the litostratigraphic features and the previous dating of the successions belonging to this unit. Furthermore, the isochronous middle Campanian inception of the Helminthoid Flysch sedimentation was inferred, for a large sector of the External Ligurian Domain.
