The prostate has been chosen as an evaluation site for a preparatory study before starting 3D treatment planning, (a true three Dimensional radiation therapy treatment planning system) in order to obtain a reliable, precise, accurate distribution of the dose to the target (tumor volume) both in conventional and conformal external beam. A protocol on prostate cancer was designed since February 1996 at our Insitute to achieve a 3D Imaging for optimal Radiotherapy Planning. The active contouring of organs allowed a precise volumetric evaluation of the selected structures, creation of a 3D solid model, and the relative volume measurement. Although the spiral (helical) CT is not the optimal tecnique in the fine detection of the prostate, it allows the detection of the vascular enhancement better than conventional CT and permits to interpolate volume data with high spatial resolution images.
