Sixty-two horses (62%) were positive for moulds and 34 (34%) had positive cultures from both eyes. Yeasts were isolated from only four subjects. The following fungal genera and species were recovered: Aspergillus (33% of the total examined horses), Cladosporium (7%), Mucor (7%), Paecylomyces (1%), Fusarium (1%), Trichoderma (1%), Drechslera (1%), Alternaria (1%), Candida spp. (3%) (identified as Candida membranaefaciens 1%, Candida famata 1%, and Candida lambica anamorph of Pichia fermentans var. fermentans 1%), and Cryptococcus sp. (1%) (identified as Cryptococcus laurentii). Different fungal genera and/or species were recovered from the same horse in 13 cases (13%). The yeasts were always associated with moulds. The number of colony-forming units ranged from 10 Aspergillus spp. in a subject, to one in 43 animals. Aspergillus species most frequently recovered were A. fumigatus (33.3% of the total Aspergillus species recovered), A. glaucus (27.2%), A. cervinus (21.2%), A. ochraceus (21.2%), A. ustus (12.1%), A. flavus (9%), A. versicolor (9%), A. niger (6%), A. candidus (3%) and A. cristatus (3%). The prevalence of fungal isolation was 84.2% on farm number 1, 72% on farm number 2, and 42.4% on farm number 3. The value found on farm 3, the only one where horses were kept outside, was significantly lower (p < 0.01) in comparison with the results obtained on the other two farms.
