Arterial blood pressure measurement plays a primary clinical role in cardiovascular monitoring of the anaesthetized patient. Invasive blood pressure is considered the gold standard and it can provide records closer to the real ones. Non invasive blood pressure has always less accuracy and precision and this is due to several factors. In this study two non-invasive techniques (oscillometric and Doppler) have been compared to the invasive one in 21 dogs anesthetized for surgery procedures. The goal was to find out potential differences among records with different recumbency and cuff location, and to establish the accuracy of the indirect methods compared to gold standard. Results have pointed out reliability of each indirect technique in every combination of dog positions and cuff site; this has allowed to establish what cuff site provides more accurate records in each different position: in dorsal recumbency, oscillometric systolic, diastolic and mean arterious pressure have resulted moreaccurate with cuff at the forelimb, while for Doppler systolic pressure the hind limb was the more reliable site; in lateral recumbency, oscillometric systolic pressure has resulted more accurate with cuff at the hind limb and dog recumbent on the cuff side, while Doppler systolic pressure, and oscillometric diastolic and mean pressures were more accurate with cuff at the forelimb with dog recumbent on the opposite side of the cuff. Results can allow to choose, compatibly with surgical requirements, the best site for measurement for every subject, giving also the possibility to quantify the error of non invasive technique in the different measurement conditions and therefore permitting a more accurate interpretation of obtained records.
