The paper shows the possibility of using hybrid drive-trains for propulsion of small electric trains. In particular Internal – Combustion Engine Based and a Fuel Cell Based schemes are considered. The Internal Combustion Engine hybrid is analysed for propulsion of regional trains operating in non-electrified lines, while the fuel-cell based is analysed for shunter locomotives that, because operating in urban areas, can fully exploit the characteristic of this drive train of being deprived of air, and having very small acoustic emissions. The result of numerical simulations of the proposed drive-trains applied to realistic mission profiles and train data showed that both solutions are feasible. The ICE based one can be also economically feasible in a short term.
