A masonry (or concrete) arch is reinforced through the application of strips of fiber-reinforced material on the intrados (or extrados, or both). Appropriate kinematic and constitutive hypotheses allow studying such a structure as a one-dimensional non-linear elastic element. The equilibrium problem leads to a free-boundary non-linear differential problem of the type, a solution for which can be determined through a simple, yet effective numerical procedure. Such procedure then is applied to the study of a simple circular depressed arch, reinforced on the intrados and loaded at the keystone, a situation already studied by other authors in an earlier experimental work.
