Abstract

STAR (SDR Space Transponder) project is an INTECS R&D activity aiming to design and develop a space transponder entirely based on SDR (Software Defined Radio) technologies and conceived for small satellites, mainly in EO (Earth Observation) missions and in LEO.The paper introduces the scenario, objectives and development philosophy behind STAR, then gives an overview of the main system characteristics and requirements. A particular attention is dedicated to those innovative characteristics (flexibility, reconfigurability, use of COTS components, modularity) driving the critical elements solutions, then the architectural principles are reported in order to present the resulting design of STAR.
