In the present study 20 dogs different for sex, breed and age affected by Leishmaniasis were examined. All the subjects underwent an electrocardiographic examination (ECG) before the beginning of the specific leishmaniasis treatment (basal ECG, GO), and after the administration of antimony in a dose of 70-100 mg/kg/SID for 30 days (post therapy ECG, G32). Heart rate (HR) and QT interval length were calculated. The HR was evaluated as the results obtained in the present study do not allow us to exclude possible cardiotoxic effects of the antimony in dogs, also according to the fact that the basal ECG in the examinated subjects did not point out abnormality of the QT interval. Further studies are needed to evaluate the cardiotoxic potential of antimony in dogs with inborn cardiac pathologies and alterations of the ECG before therapy.
