After having discussed the works of naturalists, anthropologists and philosophers who searched for the “seat of the soul”, the essay traces the emergence of cultural movements, such as phrenology, whoch made the study of the brain and its faculties the starting point for wider reflection on human nature and its potential.

Abstract
