The slow oscillation represents a fundamental basic phenomenon of the sleep; it is characterized by typical frequencies less than 1 Hz. We have applied on human sleep EEG the wavelet expansion method to automatically detect the slow oscillation. According to literature, obtained results are consistent with typical frequency of slow oscillation, and they have been confirmed in this paper also by applying the Hilbert Huang transform. The study of sleep slow oscillation is still at an early stage, although it seems to be extremely promising for neurophysiology and for neurophysiopatology. To our knowledge, the tools used in this paper were not previously applied to the study of human sleep
