Research was conducted in 2 successive years to evaluate leaf protein concentrate (for animal feedstuffs) and ethanol production from 8 Jerusalem artichoke cultivars. Above-ground biomass of plants harvested at flowering and tuber production were determined for each cultivar. Data are presented in tables, histograms and graphs. Comparison with the 1st year's performance showed that both above-ground and below-ground biomass production in the following year was lower for some cultivars but of equal value or slightly higher for others. The protein content of extracted sap was 0.7 t/ha in the 1st year and 0.4 t/ha in the 2nd. The percentage total sugar in the tubers exceeded 15% FW, with ethanol production being about 11 000 litre/ha in the 1st year and 7000 litres/ha in the 2nd. In the 1st year, DM production of the herbage reached 24 t/ha in the most productive cultivars (Topino and Fuseau 60). Tuber DM production was highest, 23 t/ha, in Violetta di Rennes and K8. In the 2nd year the highest DM yields for herbage (15 t/ha) and for tubers (14 t/ha) were obtained in Nahodka and Bianca Precoce. Production of leaf protein concentrate and ethanol would appear very promising from those findings.
