The survey sheds light on a phenomenon which has not been much investigated, but that involves almost half of the Italian large companies, the dispersion of workers. In fact, in today’s global economy, much of the economic activity in and between firms is based on dispersed knowledge workers (DWs). Therefore, developing tools to support knowledge management (KM) in distributed environments is becoming a major challenge. This paper is a part of a research project aimed at supporting managers in the implementation of Knowledge Management Systems (KMS) for dispersed workers. Using a survey of large Italian companies, the study identifies (1) three relevant groups of DWs - salespeople, technicians and managers; (2) four approaches to KM - KM approach orientated to product/service customisation, to standardise processes, to control and to tacit knowledge; and (3) the relationships between the groups of DWs and the approaches to KM.
