This paper presents a parallel study of masonry arches via both non-linear elastic analysis and the so-called ‘method of stability areas’, originally proposed by Durand-Claye and extended here to consider a piecewise-linear distribution of the compressive stresses. The two methods have been applied to the case of a pointed masonry arch of given axis and compressive strength subject to its own weight. Collapse modes have been determined for different values of the arch thickness and the friction coefficient, by studying both the progressive reduction of the stability area and the evolution of the non-linear elastic solution.

Abstract

This paper presents a parallel study of masonry arches via both non-linear elastic analysis and the so-called ‘method of stability areas’, originally proposed by Durand-Claye and extended here to consider a piecewise-linear distribution of the compressive stresses. The two methods have been applied to the case of a pointed masonry arch of given axis and compressive strength subject to its own weight. Collapse modes have been determined for different values of the arch thickness and the friction coefficient, by studying both the progressive reduction of the stability area and the evolution of the non-linear elastic solution.
