Background. The interaction between maternal environment and intrauterine fetal development as well as the assessment modalities of neonatal renal function are still under investigation. Methods. We measured the urinary excretion of total protein, albumin and N-acetyl-βD-glucosaminidase (NAG) in 41 healthy term newborn infants at the second day of life (untimed urine samples). Their own mothers were previously studied throughout pregnancy to establish possible correlations between maternal and neonatal clinical laboratory parameters. Results and Conclusions. In pregnant women serum albumin progressively decreases over the course of pregnancy, while urine albumin and enzyme output increases. albuminuria and enzymuria resulted markedly increased above normal adult limits in newbornes, addressing to an overall immaturity of the kidney function even in well-term babies. Neonatal body weight was correlated with the gestational week at delivery and placental weight; neonatal Apgar score was correlated, with the 3rd trimester maternal albuminemia. Thus, mothers welfare throughout pregnancy proved to be critical for neonatal maturation and health at term of gestation.

Abstract
