The experiments were carried out from 2003 to 2005 in open-field conditions to assess the effectiveness of steam and exothermic reaction chemicals - potassium hydroxide – against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). Treatments were carried out with a self-propelled soil-steaming machine designed for steam release after incorporation in soil of a substance that causes an exothermic reaction. Significantly lower amounts of TMV were recovered in treated than untreated soil; in addition, the level of recovered infectivity was very low. The promising results achieved may partly be due to the side effects of the treatment used, whereby some factors influencing the rate of TMV decline in soil are enhanced or preserved.
