The haematological modifications in IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) patients are commonly observed in humans, but are poorly documented in companions animals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of haematological modifications in 52 dogs and 8 cats with primary chronic gastroenteritis. A normocytic or microcytic anaemia was identified in 9.6% of dogs, whereas microcytosis without anaemia was present in 25% of cats and 13.7% of dogs. The MCV (mean cell volume) values showed a statistically significant differences among microcythemic and normocythemic group. Anisocytosis, polychromasia and Howell-Jolly bodies were common seen and suggest a bone marrow response. The low incidence of leucocytosis observed suggests that this is a low sensitivity inflammation marker in IBD. Thrombocytosis was frequently reported in microcythemic patients. Microcytosis and trombocytosis are a well known markers of iron metabolism disorder (iron deficiency or chronic inflammation) in IBD and suggest further investigation.
