Abstract
The Ptolemaic 'treatise' on incense, preserved at Edfu and Athribis, names six substances with a common initial element, gAr/gAl. The names look foreign, and, as they are associated with Punt and tA-nTr, might perhaps be found in the languages of that region. In the South-Arabian dialect of Mahra in Yemen, mgr is the name of the incense tree (Boswellia Carteri), a name which might well be derived from a Hamito-semitic root *gr. In Somalia, Yigaar designates another type of Boswellia (frereana). The same root might perhaps be found in the names of various kinds of myrrh in Arabia and Somalia.File in questo prodotto:
