Seven growing foals of Lipizzaner breed participated in a 12 months nutritional trial. The diets of the group of foals and mares consisted of normal local Karst hay plus grain superconcentrate mixture. During the first year of life, every three months TRH stimulation test (0.4 mg iv per animal) was performed. The effect of TRH on Lipizzaner foals thyroid function was determined by assesment of plasma thyroxin (T-4) and 3,5,3-triiodothyronine (T-3) before and after TIW administration. TRH was administered iv to 7 Lipizzaner foals at dose 0,4 mg/bwt. Plasma T-3 and T-4 concentration were determined before and 1, 3.5 and 4 hours after TRH administration. Plasma baseline values of T-3 and T-4 in foals at the age of 40 to 111 days were significantly different (p<0.001) from baseline values obtained in foals aged 136 to 207, 220 to 291 and foals aged from 319 to 390 days respectively. Plasma T-3 concentration increased from a basal concentration (0.41-1.55 nmol/L) to peak value (1.16-3.12 nmol/L) during four TRH stimulation tests. The highest T-3 response was observed in the youngest foals at the age of 40 to 111 days. Plasma T-4 concentration increased significantly after TRH stimulation 3.5 hours at the age of 40 to 111 days. Plasma T-4 peak concentration differed significantly (p<0,05) between foals aged 40 to 111 days and those aged 319 to 390 days. The highest T-4 response was also detected in the youngest foals at the age of 40 to 111 days. Results indicate the influence of age on T-3 and T-4 basal and response values in Lipizzaner foals.
