In the WKB approximation, we provide general expressions for the vacuum polarization correction to the penetrability factor for nuclear reactions at energies below the Coulomb barrier. Abstract

In the WKB approximation, we provide general expressions for the vacuum polarization correction to the penetrability factor for nuclear reactions at energies below the Coulomb barrier. We analyse some specific cases: (a) the reactions of the p-p cycle in the Sun, with particular attention to the p + p --> d + e+ + nu(e) cross section and to the influence on the calculation of solar neutrino fluxes. (b) The C-12 + C-12 and O-16 + O-16 reactions, especially concerning the extraction of the astrophysical S-factor at zero energy from experimental data. (c) Heavy ion fusion reactions (e.g. 64Ni + 64Ni), which are of intrinsic interest from the nuclear physics point of view, and which have been measured down to relatively low energies.
