Abstract

New materials based on blends of biological and synthetic polymers have been designed with the ultimate purpose of producing new processable polymeric materials which hopefully possess both good mechanical characteristics and biocompatibility. It was also proposed that this class of bioartificial be known as 'bioartificial polymeric materials.' The first class of bioartificial materials analyzed were materials fabricated by blending segment polyurethanes and poly (vinyl alcohol) with fibrin. These materials were evaluated for cardiovascular applications and for nerve guide channels.
