The hyperstable variable structure approach has been previously proposed in order to design a controller for the aircraft longitudinal dynamics. The fully non linear model of the aircraft is considered. In this paper some alternative configurations of the variable structure controllers are considered by adding standard PI actions and suitable smoothing of chattering. The simulation tests prove that VS-PI controllers give better performance by widening the working range of the aircraft.
