Three groups of mice were inoculated intragastrically with 3 000, 4 000 or 5 000 Baylisascaris transfuga infective eggs. Clinical signs were detected in all infected groups: 7 %, 16 % and 50 % of mice died for verminous pneumonitis within 6 days post-infection, while 2 %, 6 % and 20 % showed nervous disorders after 13 to 67 days of infection. These findings suggest that clinical symptoms may occur in man due to B. transfuga Visceral Larva Migrans.

Abstract

Three groups of mice were inoculated intragastrically with 3 000, 4 000 or 5 000 Baylisascaris transfuga infective eggs. Clinical signs were detected in all infected groups: 7 %, 16 % and 50 % of mice died for verminous pneumonitis within 6 days post-infection, while 2 %, 6 % and 20 % showed nervous disorders after 13 to 67 days of infection. These findings suggest that clinical symptoms may occur in man due to B. transfuga Visceral Larva Migrans.
