This article explores the construction and use of Italianness in Pinter’s play, 'Betrayal' and its Italian translations. That of bringing Italy as seen through British eyes back to an Italian audience is an awkward process of retranslation which cannot but entail a shift in focus in the way identity and difference are encoded and enforced. This is particularly evident in the Italian dubbed version of the 1982 screen adaptation of Pinter's play, where the translator’s infidelities, in part also prompted by the need to negotiate the technical constraints specific to this translation practice, point to a systematic strategy of mitigation and deflation of cultural, as well as dramatic, conflict.
