The main aim of this paper is to characterise the pottery production of Empoli (Florence, Tuscany, Italy) in terms of ceramic classes, types, fabrics (by thin section) and chronology. In Roman times, this site held a strategic location along the road that connected the cities of Pisa and Florence, close to the Arno river and its tributary the Elsa. Pottery – including amphorae, red slip, red painted and fine wares – and waste from pottery production have been found in many rescue excavations, inside and west of the town. The production dates to between the 4th and the 5th/early 6th centuries AD.
