Far from the classical 19th century type museum, which implicated the repetition of a series of large rooms, Pellegrini chose a different approach, exploring an exhibition space made up of connected split-level floors To devise such a system, the study of vertical links using staircases, footbridges and lifts made of iron and local stone. Apart from windows, which allow streams of natural light to pour in at intervals and at the same time intensifying the artificial light, there are a series of horizontal and vertical apertures. These create a kind of telescopic effect and enable the various rooms to communicate with each other. Through this system of alternative galleries and views from various points, the surroundings and the objects on display are constantly plaing off against one another.
Lontano dalle tipologie classiche ottocentesche che presupponevano la ripetitività di una serie di stanze - museo ad aula - Pellegrini sceglie la strada del percorso “a scatti”, cercando uno spazio museale composto da piani sfalsati fortemente articolati fra di loro. In quest’ottica particolare importanza ha così lo studio dei collegamenti, scale, passerelle ed ascensori realizzati in ferro e pietra locale. Oltre alle finestre che vengono utilizzate per formare pause di luce rinforzata rispetto al livello medio dell’illuminazione artificiale, vengono inseriti una serie di affacci non solo orizzontali, ma anche verticali che creano cannocchiali ottici e pongono in comunicazione fra loro le varie stanze in un continuo gioco di rimandi fra gli oggetti esposti ed il contenitore, secondo uno studiato alternarsi di affacci e ballatoi interni.
