The wild grapevine, Vitis vinifera L. subsp. sylvestris (Gmelin) Hegi, according to the most important opinions represent the ancestor of the current Vitis vinifera. Even now, we can find it to the spontaneous state. In Italy it is particularly common in the Tuscan Maremma and in Sardinia. Aware of the scientific importance of this botanical specie, we undertaken a research for the protection and the ampelographyc characterization of wild vines retrieved in Maremma. During the last years we have planted a collection vineyard with 70 accessions, to do phenological, ampelographyc and technological observations, considering as a reference the cv Sangiovese (present in the same vineyard). In this work we have considered 10 accessions (8 black and 2 white), analyzing data related to the: budding, physical and technological characteristics of the grape with their phenolic ripening, and the analysis of nuclear and chloroplast microsatellite profiles. The results showed that the majority of the V. sylvestris is more precocious than the cv Sangiovese, producing clusters and berries smaller. Moreover, they have achieved a good level of maturity. The grapes were particularly rich in anthocyanins and also in polyphenols. The anthocyanin profile of wild grape appeared different from that of the cv. Sangiovese.

Abstract

Sangiovese.
