Investigations into the sinkhole phenomenon, carried out since 1995, led to the characterization of a broad knowledge framework of the basin of Camaiore. The results of such studies allowed to identify at least 7 and probably the most important factors associated with the activation of the sinkhole. These factors were then reproduced as several thematic maps, one for each single factor, through the use of the software QuantumGIS. This study is intended as a further approach to the problem, laying the foundations of a method of analysis based on the attribution of scores and weights to the factors which predispose or activate the sinkhole phenomenon. Once assigned to each factor a score as a function of the influence that is believed to have on the phenomenon and a weight multiplier which amplifies the score according to the characteristics intrinsic to the factor considered, the overlap of the factor maps allowed to obtain a zoning of the study area based on the results derived from the sum of the scores for the weights of each factor. In conclusion, we produced a map of the susceptibility to the occurrence of the phenomenon sinkhole by identifying 3 classes representing the low, medium and high propension to collapse. Naturally, a true calibration of the method lacks, which is undoubtedly desirable; however, it is believed that this may represent a first important step in order to support the decision maker in town planning. The work was the subject of thesis at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Pisa.
