Surgery for tumors of the lower limbs involves large blood loss and great quantities of homologous blood. Transfusions, besides the infectious and immunological risks evaluated in recent studies, adversely affect the survival of patients operated on for bone tumors. We report the technique used for saving blood by combining hemodilution, controlled hypotension, and intra- and postoperative salvage of blood loss. The apparatus used is the Autotrans Dideco BT795/A (or BT795/P) and BT797. The results obtained are evaluated in two groups of patients treated with different methods of perioperative blood loss replacement. In the group treated with the described autotransfusion technique, the average level of preoperative hematocrit was 34%, the homologous blood saved in this group was 82%.
