Engineers are often looking for a “correct” value of the friction coefficient to be used in simulation programs for verification or design of new components and systems. Values found in literature, mainly obtained through laboratory tests, can have a weak relationship with the real ones of actual components. On the other hand, running tests with real machines can be expensive and the correct evaluation of the friction coefficient from the experimental data can be quite difficult. Bridging the gap between laboratory and field data, that means understanding how results obtained by basic experimental rigs can be related to the actual working conditions of the mechanical components, is a hard and challenging task, which can lead to time and money savings. For this purpose, a deep understanding of how different quantities influence friction can be very useful. A simple but modular experimental apparatus has been designed and built specifically to investigate the static and kinetic coefficients of friction mainly under dry conditions.
