Italian language in Tanzanian LL: between the Italian way of life and Italian mass tourism

The chapter analyses the presence of the Italian language in the Linguistic Landscape in Tanzania, where Italian appears in the public space not only as it often does in many big cities all over the world, but also in less common context. The research has been undertaken in Dar er Salaam, the main Tanzanian city where I collected about a hundred photographs showing the presence of Italian in the Tanzanian urban LL, and in Zanzibar, an island where Italian is diffused not merely in urban contexts, but also on beaches since the island is very popular with international tourists. The main research questions concern texts, their authorship, emplacement, functions, messages and the effects they have in the LL. I will analyze whether the authors are Italian speakers or not, why they choose to use Italian, and what variety of Italian language they use. Subsequently I will carry on a linguistic analysis and furthermore I will consider the impact of Italian mass tourism on Tanzania's LL.
