The understanding of Two Phase Critical Flow (TPCF) phenomenon drove the research documented in this paper (in Italian). Actually it was clear that pressure and temperature measurements (in addition to jet- thrust) were not sufficient to characterize the two phase flow at high velocity in the condition of TPCF. So it was decided to install a home-made and designed gamma-densitometer in the exit nozzle of a facility where TPCF was occurring during blowdown. The facility is PIPER. The activity was planned in view of developing an instrumentation technique suitable for application in the PIPER-ONE loop. Both PIPER and PIPER-ONE were installed in the Scalbatraio laboratory managed by Dipartimento di Costruzioni Meccaniche e Nucleari (DCMN) of University of Pisa. PIPER (current interest) was a pressure vessel suitable for blowdown experiments. The gamma-densitometer is at the basis of an established technique to measure the density of the water following the attenuation of gamma-rays coming from a suitable radiation source. The thickness of the pipe wall impose the energy and the intensity of the source. The cost of a commercial devise may be in the range of 100 million Italian Lira; so it was decided to design and to build an instrument considering the availability of elements (radiation sources, detector, data acquisition system) at DCMN. The paper documents the technological features of the device and the results from preliminary application (experimental data).
