Abstract

The transformation of a portion of the Everglades into an agricultural region involved political economic processes operating at multiple geographic scales. In particular, the development of the Florida sugar bowl was influenced by the particularities of the crop and of the commodity,by changes in the world market, and by the exigencies of the US Sugar program. Therefore, the research has examined structured coherence within an international context so as to build a more geographically complex and dynamic theory of the political economy of the place,of agroindustrial production and of environmental conflict.
