Captivity rearing of wild pheasant is changing from an experimental to a commercial technology and good results are observed after pheasant release of the offspring's obtained from captured animals. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether genetic differences can influence the fear pf pheasants and if behavioural tests can be used to differentiate the offspring's of different origin. Fear was measured in sub-adult animals (150 days old): control group was constituted by offspring's of always artificially reared pheasants and experimental group was cobstituted by offspring's of wild captured pheasants. The following tests were performed to check the fear: - unknown object test, - tonic immobility test, - unknown noise test, - human avoidance test. Results showed that the tests of the unknown object and of the unknown noise, even if they were carried out only on a sample of fifteen pheasants, discriminated the males from the females. The same tests disciminated the offspring of the pheasants subjected to the natural selection from the offspring's of the pheasant subjected to the farm selection,even if the offspring's were reared in the same conditions starting from hatch.
